☆ Opinion: A wildfire destroyed the tree I planted seven decades ago — and with it my hope for the future

Santiago, Chile CNN —How do we mourn the death of one solitary tree, when whole forests burn down? I planted it almost three quarters of a century ago, when I was just 7 years old. If I never kept that promise to my tree, it was never far from my mind as the years passed. In all likelihood, that tree, planted by me as a child, has now been reduced to cinders. It’s a reminder to pay homage and give thanks to each and every tree that succumbs to this climate debacle.

Hawaiian Electric, the state’s primary electric utility company, has acknowledged its power lines started a wildfire on Maui that morning. One caller said cars were being routed into a gated parking lot and were forced to turn around. A third caller told dispatchers they needed to open a road on the south side of town, warning that the blocked exit would result in people dying. One dispatcher told a caller stuck in traffic that emergency workers were busy “because Lahaina has a couple of house fires going on right now.”“If you’re safe, you need to stay there,” she said. Lahaina, Hawaii CNN —As the boat approaches Lahaina, the sun is strong, the waves crest into whitecaps and on the shore, so much is black. The ruins stretch as far as the eye can see, 100-foot coconut trees charred all the way up their trunks. Survivors have told CNN how traffic stood at a standstill as the fire approached, forcing some people to run into the ocean to try to save themselves. He told CNN he would open his farmland to house those without homes and urged others to stay away but send any help they could. “Every single home in Lahaina is gone,” he said.
